From the Pig's Pen

edition 18 * October 3rd, 2014

The week before the state championships often sees a lull in tournament attendance as players stay at home and prepare for their run at a state title. This year there was plenty of action and plenty of participation starting with CMSCA’s 32ns running of the Fake Copper Blanket series.

71 players competes in FCB 32 with the Open, Under 1400, and Under 1200 sections being played at G/75. Todd Mendenhall won the Open Division with a three point performance. Sathvik Chatta took a bye in round one, but dispatched his last two opponents to take the Under 1400 Division. Robert Reicht, Joshua Doolittle, and Rithvik Chelasani tied for first in a hotly contested Under 1200 Division with two out of three each. All of the players in this Division were within one point of the winners.

The G/45 Under 1000 Division saw the bulk of the competitors and had a three-way tie for first with perfect four point scores. Thomas Wenger made his tournament debut a good one by splitting the first place prize with Hrishika Roychoudhury and Mohnish Behera.

The Carolina Cobras were looking for revenge this Wednesday when they battled the Atlanta Kings for the second time this season. With two of their top three players not available, the Cobras still developed advantages on all four boards, but all four boards eventually succumbed to the Kings.

Next week the Cobras will play a late night cross conference tilt against the Seattle Sluggers. Action will start at 9PM on Wednesday at the Triangle Chess Center.
