NM Patrick Sciacca reports on the East Charlotte Octads
Held on Saturday Oct.18, due to a large disparity in ratings, it was decided that there would be two sections of four and five players respectively. The top section was won by Expert Keith Eubanks of Columbia, SC with a 3-0 score. The lower section was won by seven year old Andrew Chen, also scoring 3-0. IM Kassa Korley
Perhaps the hottest team in the US Chess at present are the Carolina Cobras. The Cobras scored their second win in three weeks to cap off a 2.5 point run as a team. This week’s invenomated victim was the early season darling of the league the Philadelphia Inventors.
Leading the way on top board was IM Kassa Korley who claimed his second Grandmaster scalp of the season defeating GM Bryan Smith with the black pieces.
NM Nadi Bozkurt held a draw on board three for the Cobras against IM Richard Costigan which left NM Kevin Mo the responsibility of securing the point for the Cobras. And secure the point he did with a win over NM Todd Bryant.
Sadly other results around the league eliminated the Cobras from playoff contention, but the improvement shown this year coupled with added momentum bodes well for the Cobes next season. The CObras season finale takes place Tuesday October 28th when the Cobras duel with world top ten player GM Wesley So and the St. Louis ArchBishops. Games start at 7:50PM and can be viewed on the Internet Chess Club of live in person at the Triangle Chess Center.
