From the Pig's Pen

This edition of From the Pig’s Pen is dedicated in memory of Bradley Fowler of King, NC who passed away on Sunday July 20th.

edition 9 * 30 July, 2014

With U.S. Open festivities starting up this week in Orlando, FL our state scholastic champions geared up for what would be quite a challenging and rewarding appearance in the USCF’s annual tournaments of scholastic champions.

Allan Jiang of Raleigh, who graduated from the North Carolina School of Science & Math this year, took time from a research project in Maine to compete in the Arnold Denker Tournament of High School Championships. Despite only playing one tournament in the last 15 months, Allan more than held his own scoring an even 3+0=3- record including a win over a National Master in round three to strongly represent our state.

Our representative in the Dewain Barber Tournament of K-8 Champions had an even bigger tournament. Emmanuel Carter of Monroe’s Union Academy played giant slayer in the first round knocking off top-seeded and 2349-rated Joshua Sheng in round one. Emmanuel continued strong play throughout the tournament wading his way through a field averaging a 2218 rating and going undefeated until the last round and finishing with a 2+3=1- score.

Emmanuel’s sister Kydriana competed in the National Girl’s Invitational as well scoring a solid three point effort.

Within the state , it was practically a forgone conclusion that Nadi Bozkurt was going to earn his National Master title at the Master Trek in Durham on Saturday July 26th. After his big performance at the World Open, he was sporting a 2383 rating coming in with only two games left to establish. Of course, if you’re going to win a title, you might as well do it while dropping the hammer, and Nadi won the Open division of the Master Trek with a 3+0=0- score.

Other section winners included Kenan Balkas, who has gained 202 rating points in his last three tournaments, in the Booster Division; Kevin Xi in Division A; Ryan Ferguson in Division B; Isaac Zhu in Division C;  and Mukta Dharmapurikar in Division D. All of whom recorded perfect records.

The Master Treks are organized and directed by NM Craig Jones. A total of 59 players participated.

At the Charlotte Chess Center and Scholastic Academy, NM Peter Giannatos presented their second edition of the CCCSA G/30 Action series. Sixteen players in total took part in the event. NM Chris Mabe and NM Sam Copeland split first in the round robin open division by scoring 4.5 points each. The Under 1700 Division was claimed by Ulugbek Ergashev who scored several upsets for a 3.5 point tally. Hrishika Roychoudhury was victorious in the Under 1000 Division winning 4 games.

Once again we had quite a few people make the list for achieving a new rating level.
