North Carolina Gambit – July 2025

On June 21, the town of Wake Forest hosted the 2025 North Carolina Super Senior Chess Tournament. It is the most successful chess tournament held in Wake Forest this decade. Over 30 seniors, including a few chess masters, participated in what was a resounding success.

The tournament included three sections: the championship section, and a U1600 and U1300 section. The championship section was hard-fought, ending in a three-way tie between National Master Mark Hoshor, Candidate Master John Timmel and Ken Carberry.

The U1600 section was claimed by Wayne Spon, and the U1300 section was won by Jeff Brueck. Wake Forest Chess Club president Brian Mannette was impressed by the turnout, and hopes this leads to growth for chess in the Wake Forest area.

“The 2025 NC Super Senior Tournament was a great success with 36 players over the age of 65 participating,” Mannette said. “Most of the people in the chess community believe this was the largest tournament ever held in Wake Forest.”

The Wake Forest Center For Active Aging was the venue for the tournament. Located on East Holding Ave., the center offers adults 55 or older a full range of recreational activities. Chess tournaments are common, as the Wake Forest Chess Club holds one at the center the third Friday of every month.

Jennie Griggs, the program director, spoke of how chess has impacted the community of Wake Forest and how it’s built community in the town.

“When Brian Mannette, a member of the senior center and one of the leaders of the club, first came to me and said that he was going to apply for a grant for the equipment needed to start the program, I was ecstatic,” Griggs said. “I know how much chess means to many.”

Gracious hosts at the Center provided snacks, beverages and accommodations for all players and spectators. Thank you to all sponsors, supporters and patrons for allowing the town of Wake Forest to host such a tournament!
